Frequently Asked Questions
• Is it legal to have an electrified security fence installed?
Yes. The installation has to meet certain guidelines with regards to safety standards, which will all be explained during a survey, but it is within the law to have the system installed, and to use it.
• What about danger to children?
The safety assessment which forms part of our surveys looks into danger to children in fine detail and recommends appropriate courses of action to ensure child safety. On installations near to a footpath, for example, we would erect a secondary mesh fence on the outside of the electrified fence to stop a child's hand from reaching the electrified wires.
• Will I need planning permission?
This is dependant on the location of the site which is to be protected. An industrial site out of town is unlikely to need planning office involvement, whereas a retail outlet in a town centre may well require liaison with the local planning officer. TSS Ltd can assist you with this at all stages.
• Surely this type of system is very expensive?
The costs of an IP installation are roughly comparable to razor wire or barbed wire deterrents, and the savings in stock loss, property damage, insurance premiums, and security personnel recoup the expense very swiftly. Many clients have experienced a payback of the full cost of the installation within 6 months.
• Is safety an issue?
Each system is installed to comply with IEC60335-2-76 and the quality standard BSi PAS47, and has been passed as safe to use by the Health and Safety Executive. The Induced Pulse design of the system ensures that an intruder is repelled from the fence, not held to it, so no permanent injury is caused.
